Performance Chips Can Increase Gas Mileage

All newer vehicles have built-in computers. The computer controls operations including timing, air/fuel ratio and shifting. This computer is pre-programmed at the factory based on an average driver who may or may not have maintenance done on their vehicle regularly or use higher-grade fuel. Therefore, it may not be optimized for top fuel efficiency for your type of driving. Using gas mileage chips may be the way to go if you want to save on fuel and gain power.

There are three types of performance chips. The first is called a control module. This type is plugged directly into your electrical system under the hood of your car. It collects the data from all of the sensors and adjusts accordingly to provide the power you need at not extra cost of fuel efficiency. This type offers constant monitoring so that you get accurate results. The module is customized to your make and model and can be purchased for various power levels, but it usually means you need to use a 91 octane fuel. The modules are created for both gas and diesel engines, and they can be installed easily within 15 minutes by plugging straight into the wiring harness. Some brand names that you might want to research include Jet, Bully Dog, Edge, and BD Diesel.

A second type of fuel saver technology is the power programmer. These devices reprogram the computer for optimum fuel saving power, but they not remain in the electrical system. Instead, you plug them into the port under the dash and answer the questions to help you modify the settings. The programmer will upload the new settings to the computer and you disconnect the programmer. This is convenient if you want to experiment with several settings until you find the one that is best for you or add changes later such as bigger tires. Another advantage is the fact that these won't require you to use the higher octane gas, which extends the savings in fuel economy since you're not having to pay more per gallon for 91 octane. Many of the companies that make the modules also produce the programmer: BD Diesel, Jet. Others include Hypertech, Diablo Sport, and Quadzilla.

A third choice is the engine management system. Instead of overriding the factory installed computer, and EMS completely replaces it. You can put in your exact instructions. After mounting the EMS, you simply disconnect the wires from the old computer and plug them into the EMS. The drawback to using an engine managements system is the sophistication. These are highly specialized, so the average driver is probably not going to bother with it just as a fuel saver alternative. One high-tech manufacturer that supplies these if you are interested is AEM.

If you use a control module or programmer you shouldn't be in danger of voiding the manufacturer's warranty as long as the part is not what caused the problem you are filing on. However, once you install an engine management system, your warranty will be voided. As a fuel saver method, the gas mileage chips (or control module) and the programmer are probably the most common choice for average drivers while the EMS is for more specialized drivers who know a great deal about their vehicle's performance.
